- Choose Packaging by Pet Food Type — Dry kibble needs bag strength, puncture review, fat and aroma protection and reliable final sealing. Treats vary from hard chews to soft or oily pieces and should be assessed from shape and formula. Freeze-dried products can be moisture-sensitive and fragile, so headspace, moisture barrier and breakage matter. Wet, hot-fill or retort pet food requires a separately qualified complete structure and actual process validation.
- Format Decision Matrix — Flat bottom pouches provide a stable base and multiple print panels after capacity is confirmed. Quad seal and side gusset bags can support larger dry-food formats when side seals, bottom closure and handling are validated. Stand-up zipper pouches can suit smaller or multi-use packs. Roll film is relevant when the packing site forms and seals the package automatically; web width, repeat, unwind, eye mark, COF and sealing conditions must match the machine.
- Material and Barrier Decisions — PET/PE, PA/PE, PET/VMPET/PE, foil-containing and other structures are possible directions, not fixed recommendations. Define moisture, oxygen, aroma, light, grease, puncture and shelf-life needs from the real product. Wet or retort food cannot inherit a dry-food structure by assumption.
- Filled-Pack and Packing-Line Risks — Confirm bulk density, fill weight, headspace, kibble edges, product dust or oil in the seal area, zipper contamination, final top seal, drop and compression risk, stacking and carton orientation. Trials should use representative product and the intended filling and sealing conditions.
- China OEM and Packing-Site Handover — Freeze one approved record covering dieline, complete laminate, thickness, pouch dimensions, zipper or handle, final-seal requirement, roll-film data where applicable, carton standard, sample status and revision. Identify who approves samples and who controls changes at the brand, packaging supplier and China OEM or filling plant.
- Product form (kibble, treats, freeze-dried, wet or retort), formula and oil level where relevant, bulk density if known, fill weight, shelf life, storage, pouch or roll-film format, dimensions, machine data, barrier target, zipper or handle, artwork variants, quantity per design and packing-site contact.
