Define the Consumer Opening Path
A tear notch creates a controlled starting point in a pouch edge or seal. It does not by itself guarantee a straight, low-force tear. Film orientation, laminate construction, notch geometry, seal layout and any score line determine how the opening continues.
Tear Notch, Zipper and Score-Line Boundaries
- Place a notch above a zipper when the consumer removes the original sealed header before reclosure.
- Keep the notch clear of product, critical print and seal defects.
- Use left, right or paired notches according to pouch orientation and user handling.
- Laser scoring is a separate controlled-weakening process and should not be implied by a tear notch quotation.
Film Structure and Artwork Review
Confirm intended tear direction, outer and sealant layers, laminate thickness, top-seal width, zipper and grip clearance, fill level and artwork safe area. A notch that works on one laminate may propagate differently on another, so approve the actual structure rather than copying a location from a reference bag.
Filled-Pack Opening Test
Test representative filled packs with intended users where practical. Check initiation force, tear direction, strip removal, product spillage, sharp edges, zipper access and accidental opening after distribution handling. Record the approved notch position on the final dieline.
