PET/PE Packaging Material Structure
Learn when to choose PET/PE packaging material for food roll film and pouches, including applications, advantages, limitations, related products and quotation requirements.
PET/PE is a common laminated flexible packaging structure. PET is usually used as the outer printing layer for appearance and stiffness, while PE provides heat sealing performance and the inner food contact side. It is often used for food packaging roll film and pouches where transparency, good print quality and stable sealing are important. The final structure must be confirmed according to product type, shelf life, filling condition and packing requirements.

What is PET/PE Packaging?
PET/PE is a two-layer laminated structure:
- PET (polyester) is commonly used as the outer printable layer, providing printing surface, stiffness and dimensional stability.
- PE (polyethylene) is commonly used as the inner heat sealing layer, providing heat seal strength and food contact surface.
PET/PE is simpler than PET/VMPET/PE or PET/AL/PE. It does not include a metallized or aluminum foil barrier layer. It is often considered for general food packaging, dry food, powder, snacks or roll film applications where cost, printing and sealing are more important than high barrier performance. It is not the best choice when strong oxygen, aroma or light barrier is required.
Typical Material Structure
| Layer | Function | Notes |
|---|
| PET outer layer | Printing and mechanical support | Suitable for gravure printing and surface finishing |
| PE inner layer | Heat sealing layer | Supports pouch sealing and contact side performance |

When to Choose PET/PE
- General dry food packaging
- Powder or seasoning packaging with normal barrier needs
- Snack packaging where high oxygen barrier is not required
- Three side seal pouches for small food portions
- Food packaging roll film for automatic packing machines
- Projects where cost, printing and sealing are more important than high barrier performance
PET/PE is a common starting point for many food packaging projects. However, every product should be evaluated individually. If stronger barrier is required, PET/VMPET/PE or PET/AL/PE can be reviewed.
PET/PE vs PET/VMPET/PE vs PET/AL/PE
| Aspect | PET/PE | PET/VMPET/PE | PET/AL/PE |
|---|
| Barrier Layer | None — two-layer structure | Metallized PET film | Real aluminum foil layer |
| Barrier Level | General moisture protection | Good moisture and light barrier; improved vs non-metallized structures | Usually stronger light, oxygen and moisture barrier |
| Appearance | Transparent or printed | Metallic visual effect | Silver metallic from aluminum foil |
| Cost Level | Usually the most economical among the three | Moderate; between PET/PE and PET/AL/PE | Higher cost |
| Typical Use | General food packaging, dry food, snacks, roll film | Snacks, coffee, pet food where better barrier is needed | High barrier coffee, powder, long shelf-life products |
| Notes | Not ideal for strong aroma, oxygen or light barrier requirements | Not the same as aluminum foil | Higher cost; review if this barrier level is required |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is PET/PE packaging?
PET/PE is a laminated flexible packaging structure using PET as the outer printable layer and PE as the inner heat sealing layer. It is one of the most common starting structures for general food packaging.
Is PET/PE suitable for all food packaging?
No. PET/PE is suitable for many general food packaging applications, but products with strong oxygen, aroma, moisture or light barrier requirements may need VMPET, aluminum foil or other higher barrier structures.
When should I choose PET/PE instead of PET/VMPET/PE?
PET/PE can be considered when the product has general barrier requirements and the buyer needs custom printing, stable sealing and a more economical structure. PET/VMPET/PE may be reviewed when better moisture or light barrier is required.
Can PET/PE be used for roll film?
Yes. PET/PE can be used for some automatic packing roll film projects, but the film width, thickness, sealing layer, eye mark and machine compatibility should be confirmed.
Can PET/PE be used for coffee bags?
It depends on the shelf life and aroma protection requirement. Many coffee projects require stronger barrier structures such as PET/VMPET/PE or PET/AL/PE, so PET/PE should be reviewed carefully before selection.
