High barrier film is a functional category, not one fixed laminate. Buyers should define the product risk and target shelf life first, then compare oxygen transmission, water-vapor transmission, light protection, aroma retention, sealing and machine requirements. VMPET, aluminum foil, EVOH and transparent coated films solve different combinations of these needs.


What Makes a Packaging Film High Barrier?
Barrier performance is normally discussed through oxygen transmission rate (OTR), water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), light transmission and aroma protection. Lower OTR or WVTR can indicate stronger protection under the stated test method, but a laboratory value alone does not determine shelf life. Seals, folds, pinholes, filling conditions and storage also affect the finished pack.

Is high barrier film one material?
No. It is a performance category that can use VMPET, aluminum foil, EVOH, transparent coatings or other structures. Selection depends on the product, process and shelf-life target.
Are lower OTR and WVTR values always better?
Lower values generally indicate stronger barrier under the stated test conditions, but the required level should match the product. Finished-pack seals, folds, pinholes and storage conditions also matter.
Is VMPET the same as aluminum foil?
No. VMPET is PET film with a thin metallized coating. Aluminum foil is a real foil layer. Their barrier, converting behavior and cost differ.
Can high barrier packaging remain transparent?
Some AlOx, SiOx, EVOH or other transparent barrier structures may be considered. Final clarity and barrier should be confirmed with the actual laminate, artwork and test data.
