Flexible Packaging Material Structure Guide: PET/PE, VMPET, Aluminum Foil and Seal Layers

Start with product sensitivity, not only thickness
Thickness alone does not define packaging performance. Buyers should first confirm whether the product is sensitive to moisture, oxygen, aroma loss, oil migration, light, puncture, heat, freezing or filling pressure.
PET/PE or PET/LLDPE may be reviewed for some dry products, transparent areas or moderate barrier projects. PET/VMPET/PE, PET/AL/PE, PET/NY/PE or other structures may be reviewed when stronger barrier, puncture resistance, stiffness or sealing performance is needed.
- Dry snacks and nuts: moisture, oxygen and shelf display
- Coffee and powder: oxygen, aroma and sealing control
- Liquid or refill pouches: seal layer, leakage and formula compatibility
- Frozen or heavy products: toughness and puncture resistance
- Transparent window pouches: clarity, ink-free area and barrier trade-off
Common structure directions buyers should understand
PET supports printability, pouch stiffness and flatness. PE or LLDPE provides the inner heat-seal layer. VMPET is metallized PET and is not the same as real aluminum foil. Aluminum foil is usually reviewed when stronger oxygen, moisture, aroma and light barrier is required. Nylon directions such as PET/NY/PE or PA/PE may improve puncture resistance and toughness.
- PET/PE or PET/LLDPE: transparent or moderate barrier directions
- PET/VMPET/PE: metallized film direction for improved barrier and metallic appearance
- PET/AL/PE: aluminum foil direction for stronger barrier needs
- PET/NY/PE or PA/PE: toughness and puncture resistance direction
- CPP or RCPP seal layers: heat resistance or retort direction when required
Window, matte finish and machine compatibility
Transparent window clarity depends on film type, ink coverage, varnish area, lamination and pouch-making process. If a matte finish is required, buyers should confirm whether matte varnish covers the window or only applies outside the clear window.
For roll film, material structure must also match COF, sealing temperature window, roll direction, core ID, repeat length and eye mark registration. For China OEM or private label workflows, the receiving filling factory should confirm that the pouch or film matches its filling line before bulk use.

- Confirm full matte or partial matte finish around the window
- Check seal strength, leakage, lamination bond and sample appearance
- Confirm roll film data with the packing machine side
- Confirm China OEM handover requirements if packaging goes to a nominated factory or warehouse
